In my experience as a product photographer there is a lot of value in unedited images especially for one off items sold by auction houses, eBay resellers, Etsy vintage sellers and similar markets
Capture the Real Condition
Buyers want to see the true condition of an item. Well lit unedited photos show scratches, patina and imperfections. These details matter when purchasing second hand, vintage or one of a kind items. Being honest about the condition builds trust and reduces returns and bad reviews
Attention Grabbing and Honest
A well lit photo does not need heavy editing to stand out. Proper lighting and composition make the item pop on screen while remaining faithful to reality. The picture grabs attention while still showing exactly what the buyer is getting
Fast Turnaround for One Off Items
Not editing the background saves time in post production. This means photos can be ready faster, listings go live sooner and costs are kept low. For sellers moving unique or high turnover stock this approach is efficient and effective
Marketplace Requirements and Benefits
eBay
While eBay recommends using a white background for most product pictures it does not mandate it. Some sellers have noted that eBay's system may not require a white background for products to appear in search results. Using a white or light grey background can make your listings look more professional and consistent.
Amazon
Amazon requires all main images to have a pure white background RGB 255 255 255 to ensure that they display correctly on search and detail pages. This applies to all categories and products including Handmade. Secondary images can have different backgrounds.
Etsy
Etsy does not require white backgrounds. They often prefer stylised photos of products in use or with related props. It is still a good idea to have an image of the item alone to reduce the likelihood of unhappy customers.
Why This Works
Sellers who use honest, high quality photography consistently find that their items get more attention, attract serious buyers, and often achieve higher final prices. Clear, accurate photos of the item and its condition are far more effective than heavy editing or artificial enhancements.
Well set up unedited product photography is a powerful tool for sellers of one off, vintage, or pre owned items. It shows the product at its best, communicates condition honestly, and grabs attention without misleading the buyer.
